If there was a drug you could give your dog to help them live longer would you use it?
The company, Loyal for Dogs thinks most pet owners would jump at the chance to have their beloved pets around a little bit longer and are currently in the process of developing a drug that can extend your dog’s lifespan.
It won’t be as easy as giving your dog a pill (which actually may not be easy in some cases). The medication will be in injection form and is targeted to be available to veterinarians to administer by 2026.
However, there are some regulatory hurdles that must be crossed before the anti-aging drug for dogs is released to the public according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
While Loyal for Dogs announced that the drug has received the first green light necessary for FDA approval they still have two more large steps to take before it is released for public pet use.

Who can take LOY-001?
The first-of-its-kind drug is called LOY-001 and is an injection that dogs can take if they meet two criteria:
- The dog must be over 7 years of age
- The dog must weigh 40 pounds or over
The drug is to be administered by a veterinarian every 3-6 months and is aimed at slowing down growth factors in large and giant breed dogs, as they tend to not live as long as their smaller counterparts per the founder and CEO of Loyal, Celine Halioua.
How does the drug work?
The drug works by targeting the cellular mechanisms that cause larger dogs to age at an accelerated rate than their smaller companions, basically slowing down the overall clock
Many pet owners are excited about the opportunity to have their furry companions around a little bit longer, while others worry about the quality of life for dogs that suffer from chronic illnesses.
Should a dog have to endure illness longer simply to make their owners happy? What are your thoughts?
As many know, medical miracles for humans have come out of veterinary medicine and this may be no different, as this is the first time that a drug of its kind may be available. This may transfer to human medicine soon after being introduced to dogs. Is a longevity drug something you would take?
