Oat flour is a grain flour that is gaining popularity in baked treats and goods for humans but is it safe for dogs?

What is oat flour?

Oat flour is simply ground-rolled oats with a very mild flavor and it is very rich in nutrients. The flour is high in protein, fiber, essential vitamins, and minerals.

Is oat flour safe for dogs?

If you are making dog treats, oat flour is a safe choice when fed sparingly.

Does oat flour contain gluten?

Oat flour is gluten-free so it is a great option for making dog treats for dogs that have allergies, colitis, or gluten intolerance.

Keep in mind that some cross-contamination of gluten can be present in oat flour. If you need to use gluten-free oat flour in your dog treats purchase certified gluten-free flour.

Are there nutritional benefits of oat flour for dogs?

When used in dog treats oat flour can provide some benefits for dogs. Not only are oats a source of prebiotics to aid in healthy bacteria growth but also provide fiber to help maintain energy levels and regular bowel function.

Potential risks of oat flour and dogs

As with any food you give your dog, you should feed oat flour sparingly and only occasionally as a treat. It should in no way replace parts of meals.

  • Potential side effects include excessive gas and bloating due to the high fiber content.
  • Oats are also starch, so oat flour is high in starch which can increase weight if fed too much

How much oat flour should dogs eat

The general rule of thumb is to feed

Small Dogs1/4th cup
Medium Dogs1/3rd cup
Large Dogs1/2 cup

But always consult with your veterinarian before feeding your dog
